What happens when this magic formula is repeated high up in the mountains?
Mountain huts are called “malghe” in South Tyrol. The name stems from about 1885 and defines a hut where shepherds usually keep their cattle in the summer months. Gradually transformed over the years, there are now about 400 in South Tyrol, dotted around the marvellous valleys, where you can rest and enjoy a good welcome, as well as a genuine meal.
Visiting these malghe means acquainting yourself with local culture: they are run by natives and epitomise the rhythm imposed by the mountains. You will find that the owners produce their own cheese and will get a glimpse of life on these higher pastures. Ciasa Salares’ malga Rumestluns is set at 2,000 m and can be reached either on foot (a splendid 1,45-hour walk via woods and pastures) or with the Piz Sorega cable car and a short 15-minute walk.
The reward is a “pic-nic”, though forget about boring sarnies and cold meats: this is a proper lunch. A triumph of the most exquisite appetizers (anchovies from the Cantabric sea, speck and grilled mortadella), pasta, sausages, home-made cheese, bacon, fresh fruit, cakes, coffee, grappa and clearly local sublime wine… should I continue?
